1998 Upper DeckFootball
Would you believe 42 rookies in this one? And they're not easy to find either so watch out for the prices. Add that to numbered inserts and parallels, 20 different Game Jersey inserts, and Upper Deck may indeed be the hottest football product so far.
| 1998 Upper Deck Football |
| Top Priced Single | Moss, Manning, Leaf are all $50 |
| Top Priced Insert | The same three are at $200 in Copper Leaf's Game Jersey is $400 and there are 1 of 1 parallels too! |
| The Numbers | 42 cards at 1 per 4 packs 17 are $8 or more 7 are $15 and up |
| Missing in Action | Charlie Batch loses out again Series two is due next week! |
1998 Topps Chrome Football
Take your 1998 Topps rookies, buff them up to a shiny finish and you get Topps Chrome. With a suggest retail price of $3 for four cards we quickly saw prices go to double that and much more. Watch out in December when Topps releases Bowman Chrome because if Topps Chrome was an indicator then Bowman Chrome will burn your fingers.
| 1998 Topps Chrome Football |
| Top Priced Single | Moss starts out at $75 |
| Top Priced Insert | Moss refractor is $300 |
| The Numbers | 20 cards at regular odds, 19 are $8 or more 9 are $15 and up |
| Missing in Action | Batch and anyone else not in Topps. |
1998 Stadium Club Football
Another nice effort by Topps with some sharp looking base cards and a great selection of Co-Signers autographs that include combinations like Leaf/Manning and Manning/Marino.
| 1998 Stadium Club Football |
| Top Priced Single | Moss, Manning, Leaf are all $20 |
| Top Priced Insert | Leaf/Manning Co-Signer is at $600 |
| The Numbers | 30 cards at 1 per 2 packs 17 are $4 or more, 6 are $8 plus |
| Missing in Action | Of course there's no Batch |
| Fleer got their Ultra Football out early and even though the stars of the future were wearing college uniforms, the great photography and tough odds made cards like this Ryan Leaf rookie hot! | ![]() |
1998 Playoff Prestige Football
How can you not love Playoff? Not only do they make beautiful, thick cards, but they remembered Charlie Batch! The hobby version of Prestige (called SSD) is much nicer than the thin retail cards, but I basically consider them to be two different sets.
| 1998 Playoff Prestige Football |
| Top Priced Single | Moss, Manning, Leaf are all $25 |
| Top Priced Insert | All 3 have Golds valued at $600 |
| The Numbers | 35 cards at regular odds 16 are $6 or more, 6 are $10 plus |
| Missing in Action | No one major enough to matter |
1998 Playoff Absolute Football
In case Prestige wasn't nice enough for you then Playoff came back with one of the nicest looking sets of the year with Absolute. Each base card has a cel section with a clear picture of the player and the only drawback is that the thick cards tend to be tough to find in mint condition. Quads are back too plus more Marino autographs.
| 1998 Playoff Absolute Football |
| Top Priced Single | Moss came out at $50 |
| Top Priced Insert | The Moss Gold should be $600 or so |
| The Numbers | 35 cards at regular odds 16 are $8 or more, 10 are $12 plus |
| Missing in Action | Another great job |
1998 Pacific Revolution
Football
1998 Pacific Paramount Football
1998 Pacific Omega Football
Pacific also did well in predicting the future as they got a Batch rookie into both Revolution and Omega. Paramount came out early in the season and had only a couple rookie cards, but the other two products are full of rookies and even have rookie insert sets.
| 1998 Pacific Revolution/Omega Football |
| Top Priced Single | Revolution Leaf/Manning both at $18 |
| Top Priced Insert | Leaf and Manning have Gold Rookie and Stars inserts in Revolution for $225 |
| The Numbers | Varies by product but at regular odds 10 are $6 or more |
| Missing in Action | Remembered Batch, Forgot Moss?? |
As we look toward the next month or two we'll be seeing Bowman, Bowman Chrome, Playoff Monument, Skybox E-X2001, and more hitting the shelves. I'll update this feature in about six weeks and at that time look for information on Skybox Premium (which just came out) as well as Skybox Thunder, UD Choice, and Metal Universe.
